One Gold Medal to fool them all!!!

The country with the largest population with respect to its size has not even a handful of skilled athletes. While losing a medal becomes news in China and USA and many other countries, winning a medal comes as a delight to many and certainly a surprise to all in India. Why is this situation present in India? I truly don't understand. Is Abinav Bhindra's feat one to be proud of or ashamed of? Isn't it shameful to proudly say that India has won a gold medal for the first time in an individual event? Who is to be blamed and what can be done to improve this situation?

It kicks up so many questions, doesn't it? I remember my sister-in-law telling me the other day- at her office in London, her colleagues ask her the same thing. A body of a billion ppl, and yet a solo gold...

But let's think- How many of the parents out there are actually willing to send their children into sports? And there is another catch if you venture here- In this cricket crazy country, will any parent (generalizing) wish to see their ward in any other sport. Agreed, there are a few who are willing to wade the untested waters, but we are a billion, man! That's not a small number...

If we are to excel in other sports, things should start at the grassroot level. Whether you like it or not...

And even in the case of Abhinav Bindra. His other medals have gone unnoticed all these years. Had he not won the gold, he would have faded into oblivion. The fault is everywhere- media, poeple's outlook...

Personally, the bigger shame is India not making it there in a game which is better known as our national sport- hockey.

You pose good, thought provoking questions friend. See, for any change to happen, things should start from scratch. Nothing can happen overnight. And realization is something which is foreign to dunderheads.

Cheers, and have a nice day.
